About Dr. Yuri Tsutsumi

Dr. Tsutsumi is a licensed clinical psychologist working at Stanford University School of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor.

She specializes in treating Eating Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive and related disorders, and Anxiety disorders utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Existential-Humanistic interventions. More importantly, the approach she takes is treating the person as a whole, emphasizing the fact that diagnoses do not define a person, but rather are for targeting specific psychological treatments supported by research.

Dr. Tsutsumi carefully tailors each of her patient’s treatment in order to maximize treatment outcomes. She has experience providing treatment in various levels of care settings ranging from outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential, and inpatient.

She received clinical training at UCLA’s Semel Institute and spent a year working at the UCLA Intensive Outpatient Program treating those diagnosed with severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Dr. Tsutsumi completed her fellowship at Stanford’s School of Medicine and received further specialized training in treating OCD, Eating Disorders, and anxiety disorders. She has worked as a clinician on research studies focusing on eating disorder treatment as well as OCD related disorders.

Her work currently focuses on psychotherapy, consultations, training, and outreach to provide psychoeducation within the US as well as internationally, targeting communities where mental health resources are scarce. Her ultimate goal is to bring accessible empirically-supported therapeutic treatments to Japan.

I pursued a career in clinical psychology since my dream is to deliver evidence supported treatment that is warm, inviting, and exudes empathy, where therapists are in cardigans and sweaters. This symbolizes where I would like to start in my attempt to diminish the stigma that surrounds mental health in Japan.
